Doshisha University's modern philosophy and vision grew out of a long period of international collaboration and it "has always taken a global approach to education and research", according to its president.
"To make it an attractive international center of knowledge that stimulates the flow of students in the world around us, we're determined to work hard at international initiatives and improving our educational and research environment to fulfill that mission," explained President Eiji Hatta.
The school's founder, Joseph Hardy Neesima, was a descendent of a samurai family, who fled Japan's rigid feudal system in 1864 to broaden his horizons in America.
