Maternity ward deaths in India spark investigation

Tests revealed IVs given to the women were laden with bacteria

JODHPUR, India - Twelve women died shortly after giving birth in an Indian state hospital, sparking a police investigation into contaminated intravenous fluids (IVs), doctors and police said on Friday.

Another three pregnant women who received IVs at Umaid Hospital in the city of Jodhpur are in intensive care in a scandal that highlights the often poor standards of India's state-run health facilities.
