Green Bay's coach has fans in a small slice of Steelertown

New York Times | Updated: 2011-02-02 07:06

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania - Down at the bottom of the hill, not far from the river and near where a steel mill buzzed for generations, the place has not changed much in the years since it was called Joe McCarthy's. There is still a long bar on the left, a pool table in the middle and Steelers posters decorating the walls.

Near the pull-lever cigarette machine is an autographed photo of Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy, who was raised a couple of miles away at the upper end of Greenfield Avenue and, as a teenager, helped out at the family bar. Scattered around the place on Monday night were people who, despite being born and raised in this blue-collar neighborhood with views of downtown, will be rooting for Green Bay to beat their Steelers in the Super Bowl on Feb 6.

"We've been waiting for this," said Bernie O'Connor, sipping a beer and eating 50-cent chicken wings, a Monday night special. "We can't lose."
