25 dead in election run-up

At least 25 people have been killed in violence related to village-level elections in the Philippines, the national police said on Sunday.

It came as police imposed tight security for Monday's elections in which Filipinos will vote for district chairmen and council members, said a senior police spokesman.

KENYA

Seven killed in stampede

Seven soccer fans were killed and dozens were injured in a stampede at a match between two of Kenya's top teams, an ambulance operator said on Saturday.

The stampede happened inside the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi during a match between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia.

"Seven people are dead. People tried to force entry during the match because they didn't want to pay," David Matee, a radio operator, said.

EGYPT

55 Sudanese migrants found

Egyptian police found 55 Sudanese migrants hidden in a container on a truck heading into the Sinai region, where they planned to cross the border into Israel.

The migrants, 40 men, nine women and six children aged as young as 4, were detained at a checkpoint near the entrance to a tunnel under the Suez Canal separating Sinai from the rest of Egypt, the sources said.
