Traffic stories have now gone into overdrive

It is the rage these days to talk about traffic in Beijing.

Having spent my fair share of time sitting on choked Beijing highways this National Day break, I think it is time for me to chime in about this topic.

The current fad of reporting on Beijing's "epic traffic" began a few months ago with an article about a bumper-to-bumper backup on the main highway from Beijing to Inner Mongolia autonomous region. Soon, other news agencies ran the story, then it hit the blogs and reporters went scurrying about taking pictures of any backup they saw. The epic jam disappeared then reappeared, quite a feat for something so epic. Now, news of Beijing's gridlock has spread to the far corners of the earth. Even if I Google "epic traffic jam in America" all the first page results are about China. How does that happen?
