Renminbi moves to have little impact on exporters

By Wang Bo | China Daily | Updated: 2010-09-08 07:29

BEIJING - The mild appreciation of the yuan will not have much of an impact on Chinese exporters, but prompt them to invest more on technological innovation and move away from low-end manufacturing, according to industry experts.

China ended its 23-month-old currency peg to the greenback in June this year and vowed to make the yuan exchange rate more flexible. The currency has since then risen some 0.5 percent against the US dollar.

The move has triggered concerns that the yuan's appreciation will put more pressure on exporters as there are still many uncertainties in the European and the US markets, China's biggest export destinations.
