Disney tales on stage

Three classic fairy tales - Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella and Beauty and the BeastI - will come alive on stage in a new Disney show at Poly Theater. The fantastic adventure starts when Mickey Mouse and his friends find a magic book among a treasure trove of costumes and other articles from classic Disney tales.

Classical melodies

German orchestra Musica Alta Ripa will use ancient instruments to play European masterpieces of 17th and 18th century, including Handel's Water Music and Purcell's The Fairy Queen, at their upcoming Beijing concert.

Danya Segal will play the clarinet , Anne Rohrig and Ursula Bundies, the violin, Andreas Vetter, the cello, Friederike Kremers, the viola and Bernward Lohr, the harpsichord.

Water inspiration

What's on

New York-based Chinese artist Wang Mansheng is holding his first solo exhibition Water and Silence at Today Art Museum. On show are over 80 of the self-taught artist's imposing experimental ink landscapes, birds and flower paintings, and mysterious mixed media works featuring symbols from ancient Chinese rocking carvings and Buddhist grotto images.

Southern views

Three young artists from Baoan District Art Center of Shenzhen are staging a group show in Beijing.

Yan Min is noted for his lithographs featuring ethnic Chinese dwellings, Yan Xiaoping depicts career women in the coastal city in heavy-colored ink paintings, and Mo Jianwen dedicates his ink art to capturing the unique landscapes of South China.

Shanghai

Jazz concert

A concert in two parts, presents two of the most simmering female voices in Shanghai, Heidi Krenn and Arlene Estrella. By interweaving her European roots with the American jazz traditions with a sometimes sensual, sometimes playful mood, Krenn creates a style of her own. With a blend of standard jazz, Latin and R&B, Estrella will rock the house with songs by Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald and others.

Concert of concerto

Oscar-winning composer Tan Dun will present his new creation, Earth Concerto, as tribute to Austrian composer Gustav Mahler. Borrowing the subjects from Mahler's masterpiece, The Song of the Earth, Tan creates a new concerto featuring instruments made of pottery, which he created. Tan will also give the Chinese premiere of his Internet symphony, Eroica, and present his acclaimed concerto, The Map.

Art Shanghai

The city's cultural administration departments have combined to present an exhibition of modern paintings in Shanghai, showcasing more than 150 works from various public art institutions in the city. This is one of the most important art shows during the Expo 2010 Shanghai outside the Expo Garden. Shanghai was an important city in the 20th-century art scene in China, where new ideas from the West and went on to influence the whole nation.

Awarded works

Martell, a French manufacturer of cognac, will award painter Zhou Chunya, sculptor Liu Jianhua, photographer Feng Hai and avant-garde photographer Bettina Rims as the Artists of the Year. A exhibition will be held for these artists in Shanghai, before moving to the Today Art Museum in Beijing and the Guangdong Art Museum.
