Torres struggles on return

China Daily | Updated: 2010-06-23 07:57

It's a year and a week since Fernando Torres last scored in a competitive match for Spain and he didn't look any closer to ending the drought on Monday, wasting a host of chances in Spain's 2-0 defeat of Honduras.

While Torres netted in a pre-tournament friendly against Poland, his last goals in a meaningful international match were his hat-trick against New Zealand at the Confederations Cup on June 14, 2009.

That three-goal burst, inside 17 minutes, came from an in-form striker who had just completed an excellent season with high-flying Liverpool. Much has changed in a year. His club slipped out of the English Premier League top four and he was goalless in qualifying, putting the scoring burden on fellow striker David Villa.
