Chile eke by the swiss

China Daily | Updated: 2010-06-22 07:52

Chile scraped past 10-man Switzerland 1-0 on Monday night in a Group H cardfest in Port Elizabeth.

The South Americans had by far the better of possession and opportunities at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium but failed to capitalize until Mark Gonzalez struck after a fine, defense-splitting run from Esteban Paredes in the 75th minute. The Swiss battled gamely after midfielder Valon Behrami was sent off in the 30th minute for what appeared to be another dubious referee's decision but in the end it wasn't enough.

In all, whistle-happy referee Khalil Al Ghamdi of Saudi Arabia issued nine yellow cards and the contentious red.
