Funking it up for World Refugee Day

By Jenelle Whittaker | China Daily | Updated: 2010-06-21 07:53

Chinese and expats converged at Yugong Yishan on Friday to mark World Refugee Day and recognize the bravery and courage of 10.5 million refugees around the world.

This year, for the first time in Beijing, music was used to join the global social awareness campaign, held on June 20 each year and initiated by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

The event, called Soul Asylum, included a screening of the highly acclaimed documentary Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars, a lineup of outstanding local Beijing bands, high-profile DJs and a photography exhibition.
