China Daily turns 29, celebrating with hotels, airlines
China Daily marked its 29th birthday in the company of distinguished guests from the hotel and airline industry at a grand party with the theme of Happy Trip, Happy Reading on Tuesday evening.
In his welcome speech, China Daily's editor-in-chief Zhu Ling thanked friends from the two industries, who have been with the paper ever since it was launched 29 years ago.
Quoting the words of Russian literary giant Leo Tolstoy - "what matters is not the quantity of knowledge but the quality" - he expressed hope for a closer and more efficient partnership.
The live performance accompanying the banquet featured traditional Chinese Peking Opera and exotic American bluegrass music by The Redbucks band, led by China Daily's former employee Christine Laskowski.
Sandeep Bahl, general manager of Delta Airlines, China and Hong Kong, called China Daily "the voice of China in English" and added, "The paper has been maturing and extending the coverage of its reporting beyond China."
Speaking on behalf of the Chinese hotel industry, Stephen C.T. Hsu, chairman of the China Tourist Hotels Association, said the paper was not only providing readers with the best possible coverage of the rapid changes occurring in the country but also had emerged as the exclusive English-language media outlet of the hotel and airline industry.
Nils-Arne Schroeder, general manager of Hilton Beijing Wangfujing, said China Daily had not just met but exceeded the ever-changing demands of consumers, especially in the current e-commerce era.
"The printed newspaper was, and will always, remain a 'must-read tool', and with the experience and knowledge of the highly recognized and respected editorial team, China Daily remains the leader in delivering this on a daily basis," Schroeder said.
