The bean fraud that sold itself as a cure for diabetes

China Daily | Updated: 2010-06-01 07:54

"Your kitchen is the pharmaceutical store."

"The neighborhood vegetable market is the best hospital."

Such are the theories of Zhang Wuben, who became extremely popular as a food therapist. Diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, said Zhang, can be cured by simply eating mung beans or eggplant. The list for his patients is so long that people have to wait until 2012, after paying a booking fee of between 2,000 and 5,000 yuan. Zhang, however, is a fraud. He never studied in Peking University, never obtained the title of senior nutritionist from the Ministry of Health. Who is responsible for such a myth? Some people have discussed the issue in blogs.
