Hey! Your umbrella just stabbed me in the eye!

Hey! Your umbrella just stabbed me in the eye!

Where did spring go? It is a question that everyone is asking these days. Beijing has never had that long of a spring, but this year it seemed to only last for a few days. One week I was bundling up in my freezing apartment and the next I was breaking out my T-Shirts and buying ice creams.

I am glad that the weather is warmer. April this year in Beijing was a terrible combination of cold and dreariness. But the welcomed heat that has arrived with the glaring summer sun will, in the coming weeks, spawn a cultural phenomenon I have always quietly loathed.

Take a stroll on any university campus on a bright sunny day and it will confirm that the hibernation of the umbrella has ended. Everywhere you look you will see pale Chinese girls popping open their umbrellas to hide from the bright sunshine.

Hey! Your umbrella just stabbed me in the eye!
