Huang Yi gets busy

What's new

Actress Huang Yi has been rather busy lately - not just with acting but also with explaining.

Two photographs of her wedding to a reportedly well-heeled man surfaced on some websites several days ago.

In a statement soon after their release, Huang did not deny their authenticity but apologized for any difficulties they may have caused her friends and family.

But this has not stopped speculation that Huang orchestrated the photographs' release, just before the promotion of her two new movies, for some media attention.

At a press conference for Mammon Hotel, in which she co-stars with Nicholas Tse and Nick Cheung, Huang dismissed the reports and hoped that people would focus more on her works.

Calligraphy contest

The Jiucheng Palace Nationwide Calligraphy Contest 2010 is now open.

All Chinese calligraphers, amateur or professional, are welcome to submit their entries by July 10 online at www.chinanap.net.

An exhibition featuring 100 calligraphic works by veteran artists and 136 of the contest's winning works is scheduled to run from Aug 28-31 at the Shaanxi Museum of Art.

The Jiucheng Palace in Linyou county, Shaanxi province, once a Tang imperial resort, is well known for a stone tablet carved with a calligraphic work by Tang official-scholar Ouyang Xun.

Africa put in focus

African Cultures in Focus 2010, a series of cultural-exchange programs that recently began in Beijing, will also tour Lanzhou, Xining, Qingdao and Shenzhen.

Organized by the Ministry of Culture and other cultural organizations, the seven months of events include exhibitions of photos, art works, publications and cultural relics besides live performances, screenings of documentaries and seminars, involving artists, scholars and researchers from China and African countries.

The exhibition will also feature animated films and high-definition photos, to illustrate the scientist's revolutionary theories about the universe.

Dragon Boat festival

The 2010 China Jiaxing Dragon Boat Folk Culture Festival will run from June 13-17 in Jiaxing, eastern Zhejiang province.

It will feature a rich variety of tourist and folk culture activities, including ceremonies, gala shows, street parades, dragon boat races, foods and local specialty fairs, art exhibitions, festive souvenir design contests, and academic workshops, organizers say.

The traditional Duanwu, or Dragon Boat Festival, is believed to have a history of some 2,000 years.

More than 30 ethnic groups from across China celebrate the festival on May 5 each lunar year but in different ways, according to Qi Qingfu, a folk culture researcher with the Ministry of Culture.
