By Du Li | China Daily | Updated: 2010-05-27 07:57

A series of projects to improve the railways have been completed and put into operation, including the Wenzhou-Fuzhou, Fuzhou-Xiamen high-speed railways and the grid renovation project of Hengfeng-Fuzhou railway.

Further projects such as Hefei-Fuzhou, and Xiamen-Shenzhen railways have also kicked off recently.

With the completion of some of the new projects, the travel hour from Fuzhou to Beijing will be reduced to six hours while the time from Fuzhou to Shanghai will be just hours.

The total length of railway in Fujian will reach 4,500 km in the next three years.

Liu Zhijun, minister of railways, said: "Fujian has a unique geological advantage linking the Yangtze and Pearl river deltas, and facing Taiwan, so railway construction is very important for the area's economic development."

Sun Chunlan, director of the committee of the People's Congress in Fujian, said Fujian's railway system, will help boost the development of the Fuzhou (Pingtan) Comprehensive Experimental Zone.
