SEOUL, Republic of Korea - With both Koreas in the World Cup together for the first time, many on this divided peninsula were hoping for a moment when sports can cross borders and unite people.
The feeling was so strong that some Republic of Korea (ROK) lawmakers even proposed to send a united group of fans to South Africa to support both Korean teams.
But now the deadly sinking of an ROK warship in March has shattered the mood and heightened tensions between the two nations, with the side effect of turning the World Cup into a missed opportunity weeks before kickoff.
