Suicides demand attention
The Foxconn group supported monks' rights to perform religious rites in Shenzhen to draw attention of the government and public away from the six suicides - two unsuccessful - by employees this year. This is no solution to a very serious problem, says an article in Oriental Morning Post. Excerpts:
On the whole, Foxconn has been a good employer, managing its affairs well, offering good salary to and taking good care of its employees, and providing them insurance cover. But the world's largest contract manufacturer of electronic products actually lies at the end of the global industrial chain. So intensive is the competition and so great the challenge of Apple's huge contracts that Foxconn employees can meet only part of the demand.
