Village official drive ends with huge grad turnout

13,000 apply for 3,000 positions, seen as a stepping stone to career in civil service

More than 13,000 university graduates had applied to be village officials in Beijing by Wednesday, in the annual application drive.

The enrollment period started on April 23. The total number of applicants was a huge increase over the 2,300-person recruitment goal.
