Officials to be enlightened by philosophy

By Xu Fan | China Daily | Updated: 2010-04-19 08:06

Chinese classical subjects of Confucianism, Taoism and Legalism will be added to a short-term training program for senior chengguan officials at Tsinghua University.

Chengguan is the name given to the city's urban administration officials, who oversee and enforce various laws to do with illegal housing and the taxi businesses. They are not to be confused with the police, whose principal concern is security.

In a move to improve a chengguan's "comprehensive set of qualities", more than 6,000 officials are required to take part in numerous training projects - with perfect attendance, said officials with Beijing Municipal Bureau of City Administration and Law Enforcement on Sunday.
