The day Nixon came to town

Former United States president Richard Nixon had a difficult relationship with the media and photographers often struggled to get him in a relaxed pose.

One of the best known images in Shanghai: A History in Photographs, 1842-Today is one H.S. took of Nixon in 1982. Nixon returned to Shanghai to mark the 10th anniversary of signing the Communique, which signaled the restoration of diplomatic relations between China and the US.

Nixon was on a special train coming back to the city with party officials and was in such an ebullient mood he took it upon himself to go down the aisles of the train serving everyone beer with a towel over his arm.
