50 Italian brands at clothing fair

Nearly 50 fashion brands from Italy will set up shops in Beijing next week, occupying more than 7,100 square meters at the China International Clothing & Accessories Fair (CHIC).

The fair will run from March 28 to 31 at the New China International Exhibition Center.

Italy's 30 participating companies will form the biggest contingent to CHIC, says Antonino Laspina, commissioner of the Italian Trade Commission's Beijing Office.

Laspina says China's garment imports from Italy peaked in 2008 at a total value of $334 million.

The country, however, will not take part in China Fashion Week, which is on from March 24 to 30 in Beijing, Laspina says.

Chen Kaige takes on The World

Chen Kaige will direct the music video of The World, a song dedicated to the Shanghai Expo's volunteers. Photographer Zhao Xiaoding says the video will be shot both in Shanghai and Beijing and feature not only the singers but also volunteers.

Composer He Muyang, famous for writing and producing the folk song Phoenix Legend scores the song while Wang Pingjiu writes the lyrics. Soprano Tan Jing and baritone Liao Changyong sing the song while many entertainment stars, including the popular Shanghai stand-up comedian Zhou Libo will appear in the video.

War epic stars new actress in lead role

What's new

Rising actress Jing Tian (pictured) - not South Korean star Kim Heesum - is the leading lady of The Warring States, a war epic for which filming has just started.

The film marks Jing's big screen debut. The Beijing Film Academy graduate has only a few TV series under her belt. But Sun Jie, the film's producer, is confident of his choice, saying that the fact that Jing has learned dancing and martial arts will help her portray her character well.

The film tells the story of Sun Bin and Pang Juan, who begin as buddies but turn into rivals in the chaotic Warring States Period 2,000 years ago.

Jing plays Tian Xi, a girl involved in love affairs with the two male characters. Sun Honglei, who plays an impressive opera enthusiast in Chen Kaige's Forever Enthralled, acts as Sun Bin while Hong Kong star Francis Ng plays his rival Pang Juan. Kim, well known in China for her roles in the South Korean TV dramas in the 1990s, plays Pang's sister.

China Rush to begin in August

Disney-ABC International Television (DAIT) Asia Pacific has signed an agreement with Shanghai Media Group (SMG) to produce China Rush, a Chinese version of the popular CBS reality show, The Amazing Race.

The program's 20 foreign participants will travel across 12 Chinese cities, beginning and ending in Shanghai. The 12-episode series will premiere in August and will be shown every week. The season's finale will air in October to coincide with the end of the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai.

High-definition 'Power Sports'

The first high-definition (HD) fighting channel, "Power Sports" will be launched by Tianjin TV Station at the end of April this year. It will broadcast domestic and international martial arts, mixed martial arts, taekwondo, wrestling, boxing, sanda, kickboxing, kendo, sumo and karate. The HD digital platform is a leap forward in television technology and can be experienced at the China Content Broadcast Network show in Beijing from March 23 to 25.
