At least 100 people injured in morning temblor; 30 minor aftershocks hit sparsely populated area
KOVANCILAR, Turkey - A strong earthquake killed 57 villagers in eastern Turkey and injured at least 100 people early on Monday, local officials said, as rescuers worked to free survivors trapped under the rubble.
The quake woke residents from their sleep when it struck before dawn, centered on the sparsely populated area of Basyurt in eastern Turkey's Elazig province. The quake had a magnitude of 6.0 and was followed by 30 minor aftershocks.
