Applause for anti-trafficking effort

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) praised Beijing on Tuesday for its efforts to combat human trafficking and called on the world to pay more attention to that area. IOM Director-general William Lacy Swing said at a seminar in Beijing that he appreciates China's multiple-ministry system in fighting trafficking and expected more cooperation with China as it is attracting more and more foreign migrants.

Swing met Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Tuesday. China is not a member country of the organization but is cooperating with it to build capacity for migration management.

Uganda

At least 45 killed in landslides

Landslides in a mountainous region of Uganda killed at least 45 people overnight and left more than 100 others missing in the East African nation, a police commander said on Tuesday.

The landslides occurred about 275 kilometers (170 miles ) east of the capital, Kampala, in the mountainous region of Bududa. The area has long suffered from landslides but rarely has the death toll been so high.
