30,000 protest in Athens

Police fired tear gas at demonstrators in central Athens as clashes broke out yesterday during a large protest march against government austerity measures. Police clashed with scores of violent protesters who hurled rocks and plastic bottles near parliament, but the violence remained fairly limited.

More than 30,000 protesters marched, while unions staged a general strike that grounded flights, shut schools and crippled public services in a show of strength against the government.
