District official on trial

A former district governor stood trial yesterday for allegedly taking 2.84 million yuan in bribes, the Shanghai No 2 Intermediate People's Court said.

Cai Zhiqiang, 46, had served different posts in the Shanghai Municipal Personnel Bureau and became governor of Shanghai's Putuo district in 2005. From 1999 to 2009, Cai has allegedly abused his power to help companies and individuals on land acquisition and approve permanent residency in exchange for money.
