LA axes 1,000 jobs
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Thursday ordered the elimination of 1,000 city jobs, which was expected to save up to $50 million this fiscal year. In a letter to department heads, Villaraigosa said he was accelerating efforts to shift as many employees as possible to vacant positions not financed by the city's general funds and would impose layoffs where necessary.
The move came one day after the City Council failed to order any cuts amid a deepening budget crisis that sees a shortfall of $212 million.
