Aim to cut carbon

China has reiterated in a latest report to the United Nations that it would endeavor to cut the amount of carbon produced per unit of economic output by 40 to 45 percent below projected growth levels by 2020 from 2005, State-run Xinhua News Agency reported yesterday.

The report, issued before a Jan 31 deadline set in December's "Copenhagen Accord", also says China would develop renewable and nuclear energies to increase the proportion of non-fossil-fuel power in China's total primary energy consumption to around 15 percent by 2020. It says the Chinese government will also try to increase its forest area by 40 million hectares by 2020 from the 2005 level.
