Freak accident kills girl
A six-year-old girl died after she was reeled into an automatic iron door at a recycling center in Changping district on Friday, Beijing Times reported.
The girl whose parents work at the recycling center, was playing alone near the automatic iron door when it was activated and she became trapped by it.
The girl's left thigh was mangled by the equipment and she died soon after.
Police are investigating.
Senior perishes in blaze
A fire at a senior's home at 4 am on Friday in Pinggu district claimed the life of an 89-year-old man who died in his bed, Beijing Times reported. Staff at the Jinyang apartments said the fire was caused by an overheated electric blanket that had been left on too long.
The fire was quickly tackled by staff but not before the man, surnamed Shen, lost his life.
The case is under investigation.
Teacher quizzed over porn
A teacher at a senior high school was arrested by Haidian police last week for allegedly uploading porn pictures onto his blog on 163.com during his stay in Beijing last year, Beijing Times reported.
The man, surnamed Zuo, was a senior teacher at a middle school in Ningxia Hui autonomous region. He visited Beijing in November for an academic exchange program. During his stay, he allegedly uploaded more than 700 porn pictures onto his blog, getting 36,023 hits.
Man arrested for ax attack
A man is facing charges after allegedly attacking another with an ax.
He appeared in Fengtai district court on Friday, said the Beijing Times.
The man was reportedly drunk when he assaulted another man, cutting him on the head, and damaging property worth 3,460 yuan.
The alleged attacker escaped in a taxi after the Oct 13 incident but the female taxi driver noticed blood on his clothes and took him directly to the police station.
The case will continue this week.
Kindergarten closed
More than 150 families are scrambling for a replacement after Weiming nursery school was closed on Saturday, Beijing Youth Daily reported.
Weiming nursery school opened seven years ago and was the only public nursery school in the Wanliu area of Haidian district.
School officials said a classroom building that the government planned to build had not been completed and the school could not afford the 200,000 yuan annual rent for the existing space.
Plate ban eased for festival
The time restrictions on driving cars and lighting firecrackers will be relaxed during Spring Festival, which falls on Feb 14, said the city's government, Beijing News reported on Sunday.
From Feb 13 to Feb 21, people will be able to drive their cars without limitations from the usual license number limits.
The prohibition of firecrackers will also be canceled on Feb 13 and Feb 14 for celebrating Spring Festival. Between Feb 15 and Feb 28, people will be allowed to light firecrackers between 7 am and midnight.
Golf club must pay vineyard
A golf club was ordered to pay 300 yuan to a neighboring vineyard after golf balls kept raining down on the property and damaging vines.
The ruling was made by Fangshan district court.
The owner of the vineyard requested compensation of 5,000 yuan but failed to provide evidence of the full extent of the damage.
