Paraguay striker critical

MEXICO CITY: Doctors are fighting to save the life of Paraguay striker Salvador Cabanas after one of Latin America's most prolific goal scorers was shot in the head at a bar just before dawn on Monday.

The surgeon who operated on the 29-year-old, who had been expected to spearhead Paraguay's attack at the World Cup in June, said the player was critical but stable in a Mexico City hospital.
