Ode to spring

The traditional instruments orchestra of the China Opera and Dance Drama Company will stage a grand show to usher in the Spring Festival. The program includes ensembles of classic Chinese instruments, percussion, jinghu (used in Peking Opera), as well as solo, duet, quartet and chorus singing of Chinese and Western songs.

Different styles

What's on

The oil paintings of Li Mingzhu, Ma Ye and Aiao present three different perspectives of Chinese tradition in their latest exhibition, Image of China. Li's porcelain vases are shaped like humans, while Ma's Beautiful Scenery series shows modern young women in traditional cheongsams. Aiao's The Empress series is based on the images of Manchu women of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

Abstract art

What's on

Artists Mark Cheung and Zhang Zhaoda have created a series of abstract paintings since 2006 at their studios in Beijing.

Over 100 of their abstract paintings are on show at Today Art Museum in downtown Beijing.

Using techniques of traditional ink brushwork, these paintings impress the viewers not only for their instant visual impact but also leave a lingering feel of poetry and music.

Cityscape

Fourteen South Korean artists jointly present Layered City. The artists see the city as a compounded entity with layers of politics, economics, sociology and the natural environment. The past, present and future of a city also exist in a layered form in the minds of the artists who present their ideas through explosive images, abstract dots and geometric figures.

Fine Art Print Festival

What's on

The third annual Fine Art Print Festival (FAPF) takes off at the 798 art district. The festival traces the changing aesthetic tastes of the times and has become a bridge that spans the distance between contemporary art and the public. At 2010 FAPF one could buy artworks, ranging from classics by masters to innovative pieces by new and emerging artistic talents. Most of these are priced below 50,000 yuan.

The festival is hosted by China Print Art Online (www.ChinaPrintArt.cn), and is a collaboration between Amelie Gallery, Ku Gallery, La Plantation Art Center, Onemoon Gallery and Yun Gallery.

Laugh with the Brits

Whose Line Is It Anyway, the improvisational comedy institution, will be on show at Sanlitun Village on 25 January. No less than five veterans of the UK comedy scene, namely Richard Vranch, Ian Coppinger, Steve Steen, Stephen Frost and Andy Smart will put up a one-night-only performance in The Village's ORANGE creative space.

It is definitely a night not to be missed for fans of Whose Line Is It Anyway.

Death-metal storm

What's on

Ever since Swedish band In Flames formed in Gothenburg in 1990, it has sold more than two million records of Death-metal Storm worldwild. Reroute To Remain in 2002 and The Soundtrack to Your Escape in 2004 continued to prove the power of the band.

With the current lineup including Bjorn Gelotte on guitar, Daniel Svensson on drums, Peter Iwers on bass, Jesper Stromblad on guitar and Anders Friden doing the vocals, the band's upcoming performance is their first in China.

Hike up the Great Wall

Visit a section of the Great Wall that was completed around 1580, during the reign of the Ming Dynasty Emperor Wan Li.

The hike begins with a warm-up, walking up a valley road, followed by a good climb up a hillside path to reach the Great Wall. This climb is steep in a few places, and will take 50-60 minutes. After reaching the top, you will follow the Great Wall as it winds along and up a ridge.

The Beijing Hour will features lively news and current affairs program with domestic as well as international news from around the world, as well as give an insight into the world of business with financial analysis and an up-to-the-minute glance at world markets. There will be sport reviews and previews, weather forecasts and discussions with people in the news and high-profile personalities who will take a look at what the world media is saying about different issues.

Tunisian Film Festival

The first Tunisian Film Festival in China starts on Jan 25 and will run until Jan 31, featuring four latest Tunisian movies, including L'accident, Un ete la goulette, Fleur d'oubli and Par de les rivieres. Among these Rachid Ferchiou's L'Accident, the opening film, recounts the story of Fares, a university graduate and occasional taxi driver, waiting for the place he deserves in society.
