Classic Peking opera

What's on

The China National Peking Opera Company will stage Taking the Tiger Mountain by Strategy, a play that debuted in 1958 and was one of the eight theater works popular during the "cultural revolution" (1966-76). Set against the civil war of the late 1940s, it tells the story of a brave PLA hero Yang Zirong infiltrating a bandit group deep in the Tiger Mountain of the Northeast. The performance blends traditional Peking Opera aria, modern ballet and symphony music.

Engraving art

Contemporary engraving works by nine accomplished artists, including Sui Jianguo, Yin Zhaoyang and Wang Guangyi, are on display and cover a range of themes - from portraits, animals, and daily objects, to cityscapes and experimental scenes.

Buddhist art

What's on

An exhibition of Tibetan Thangkas, or painted or embroidered scroll work, presents the essence of Buddhist art. They usually carry images of the Buddha, Bodhisattva, and deities set amid lotuses and clouds. When it's a painting, the artists use natural pigments, which make for vivid images of exquisite detail.

In 1661, Colbert, a powerful advisor to the young king, gets his rival Fouquet arrested. While all the other artists support the decision, poet de La Fontaine confirms his support for Fouquet. Colbert vows to make the rebel admit the truth, but La Fontaine, even when penniless, stands by his convictions. La Fontaine's resistance takes the shape of the Fables, a literature of protest against a despotic government in the height of its decline.
