Foreign gamblers arrested

Two foreigners, surnamed Kang and Choi, who allegedly organized gambling in Shaoyaoju, Chaoyang district, are facing charges and six foreigners who were allegedly gambling there have also been detained,

Beijing police said yesterday.

The eight, all students from four Beijing universities, were arrested in the early morning of Jan 16. They are also facing likely punishment from their universities.

Stabbing death 'ordered'

A man from Heilongjiang province was stabbed to death at a gambling house in Chaoyang district Saturday evening and another man was injured, the Mirror Evening News reported.

The brother of the victim claimed the boss of the gambling house ordered the stabbing but police would not confirm the allegation, said the paper. At least two suspects were reportedly arrested at the scene.

Nanluoguxiang to upgrade

Dongcheng district government will invest 200 million yuan on improving the west side of Nanluoguxiang in an attempt to improve traffic flow in the hutong area, said Yang Yiwen, governor of Dongcheng district.

The local government will spend 25 million yuan on helping the main business street extend through the nearby 16 hutongs, he said. Traffic flow will be improved this year and a facility to share travel information will be built in an attempt to boost tourism.

'Abusive' vendor charged

A man, surnamed Yue, who allegedly beat rival vendors in disputes over territory near the National Stadium has been ordered to appear in Chaoyang district court along with four others, Beijing Times reported.

Yue reportedly sold goods around the Bird's Nest. He has also been charged with carrying a knife and causing public disorder. Prosecutors said Yue plotted with others and threatened and attacked vendors near the box office at the stadium between May and August.

Doctor alleges assault

A doctor from Beijing Renci Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic allegedly sustained a broken bone after urban management officers, known as chengguan, assaulted him, according to a report in Beijing Times.

The doctor, surnamed Wang, reportedly got into a dispute with the officers from the Wangsiying urban management team after they attempted to remove the clinic's advertisements from a pole on Friday. Wang said he asked to see their licenses and requested that they deal directly with the clinic but was rebuffed both times. He said officers kicked him and took him away by force. Police have begun an investigation.

Huge new park opening

A massive new park south of the Beijing-Daxing Sanhaizi outskirts park is under construction and is set to be completed later this year.

The park will be free to enter and is set to open before National Day, Beijing News reported yesterday.

A spokesperson from the Beijing municipal bureau of landscape and forestry said the open space northeast of Daxing district will incorporate marshland habitat and be home to a wide range of fish and aquatic plants. The new green space will coordinate with Olympic Forest Park, which is next to the Fifth Ring Road near National Stadium.

Corrupt headmaster jailed

The headmaster and the deputy head at an elite primary school in Xicheng district were sentenced at Xicheng district court to six years in prison for diverting 1.4 million yuan in school donations toward investments in funds and stocks, the Mirror Evening News reported.

The court heard that the pair from Huangchenggen primary school shared the money they made between 2004 and 2006. They turned themselves in to authorities in 2008 and returned the money after they were arrested.
