Car ban mulled

Shanghai is welcoming input from the public on new traffic plans aimed at reducing traffic congestion on the roads during the expo period. The initiative looks to mirror the system implemented in Beijing during the 2008 Summer Olympics, meaning that drivers with odd and even-numbered license plates would be prohibited from using their vehicles on alternative days. Drivers with government-licensed vehicles may also be banned from using their vehicles from May to October. About 50 million drivers are expected to be on the roads daily this year in Shanghai, a six percent increase from 2008. The number of commuters is expected to peak during September and October.
