Foot-and-mouth disease

South Korea reported its first outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in eight years yesterday, prompting quarantine officials to slaughter animals to stop its spread, officials said.

Six dairy cows at a farm in Pocheon, about 45 km north of Seoul, tested positive, Agriculture Ministry official Lee Chang-buhm told reporters. Later yesterday, quarantine workers began slaughtering all of the 185 dairy cows at the farm to stem the spread of the disease.
