Protests won't be tolerated

Iran's police chief yesterday warned supporters of opposition leader Mihossein Mousavi to expect harsh treatment if they participate in illegal rallies. Esmail Ahmadi-Moqadam also said 500 opposition protesters have been arrested since clashes on Sunday that left at least eight dead.

Iranians staged nationwide rallies yesterday to express their support for the conservative clerical rulers of the Islamic state, state television reported. Supporters of Mousavi also planned to hold fresh rallies, opposition websites reported.
