The University of Macao, the oldest higher education institution on the island, has high hopes for its future success, following news that its long-awaited new campus will be completed within three years.
According to the university's rector, professor Wei Zhao, the new campus will cover an area of 1.09 sq km on the Hengqin Island, set some 200 m away from Macao, but actually under the jurisdiction of Zhuhai, a coastal city in Guangdong.
The new campus will be isolated from the rest of Hengqin Island. A tunnel will be built to connect the two campuses, ensuring that students and faculty will not need to go through border procedures between Macao and the mainland, said Zhao,
