Barrier climber shot dead

Israeli guards yesterday shot dead a man who tried to scale a border fence and enter the Gaza Strip at the main border crossing between Israel and the Palestinian coastal enclave, the Israeli military said. The statement added that the man was an Israeli citizen and was "alleged to be mentally ill". It said he died of his wounds in hospital.

Israel bans all its citizens from going to Gaza.
