The number of HIV/AIDS sufferers in Beijing increased to 6,987 at the end of October, with 1,105 new cases reported this year, according to a Beijing health bureau report released last Friday.

Most of the new carriers are young adults. And 77.98 percent of the 1,105 are foreigners and Chinese people from outside Beijing, the report said. More than 70 percent of the 1,105 new sufferers contracted the virus through sexual transmission. A total of 11 percent, or 122 people, were infected through intravenous drug injection.

From the beginning of the year to October, 331 of 9,981 people who received free HIV testing were found to be HIV positive.
