After being arrested in Sanya, Hainan province this Saturday, fugitive Li Lei, 29, who was alleged to have killed six of his family members last Monday, was returned to Beijing yesterday under police escort.

A report released Sunday said that police doubted Li would have killed his family over a 6 million yuan compensation dispute linked to the demolition of their first house.

The report was obtained by the Mirror Evening News yesterday.

The report said that during a two-hour police inquest, Li confessed that long-term hostility towards his parents and wife eventually led to the slaughter.

Li, describing himself as having a "withdrawn personality", said he had grown up under strict family discipline. He then married his wife Wang Meiling, in his opinion an "uncompromising" woman.

On Nov 23, Li spent the whole day in his restaurant in Fengtai district and had dinner and liquor with his friends. He told his wife to go home and look after their children, the report said.

The report said around 10 pm, Li drove back home and began his bloody murder: he stabbed his wife in their bedroom and then killed his younger sister and both his parents.

Deciding that "his children would live without care", Li then stabbed his two children in their sleep about one hour later.

Li said he had closed his eyes during the murder of the 7-year-old primary school student and one-year-old baby.

The following day, Li took a train from Beijing to Shenzhen, Guangdong province, where he lived two days in a hotel. He spent 10,000 yuan a day in knowledge he "would be arrested sooner or later".

On Friday, Li traveled to Sanya by coach. That afternoon, the crime scene was discovered at his home in Daxing district in Beijing. Police targeted Li as lead suspect and informed police nationwide.

Li arrived in Sanya at 9 am on Saturday and checked in to a hotel near the coach station. Ten hours later and only 26 hours after the crime scene was discovered, he was detained in a leisure club.

Li's murder shocked relatives and neighbors. According to his uncle Li Hanjie, who had shared a family dinner with Li and his parents in the evening before the murder took place, Li was "talking and smiling normally".

Wang Dong, Li's former neighbor in Tiangongcun village, said Li was a silent but naughty child. He didn't think Li had any conflicts with his family and denied that Li suffered from mental illness.

"It is hard to judge Li's motivation and mental state," said Li Meijin, a professor of criminal psychology at the Chinese People's Public Security University.

"The suggestion of mental disorder is unlikely because Li waited over one hour before killing his sons," said Li.

According to Gao Feng, a professor at the Beijing People's Police College, the suspect could suffer from a hidden mental disorder or serious psychological problem. Long-term pressure might also be a trigger.
