Afghan deployment certain

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown confirmed yesterday that 500 extra UK troops are heading to Afghanistan, ahead of video conference talks with US President Barack Obama.

Brown told lawmakers that the reinforcements will arrive shortly into southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, increasing Britain's force in Afghanistan to about 9,500 troops. Obama will announce his own troops-increase decision today.
