Updated: 2009-12-01 07:59 AIDS statistics grow At least 4,073 people in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region tested positive for HIV in the first nine months this year, officials from the regional health authority said yesterday. The total number of HIV carriers and AIDS patients in the region is now at 27,012, which makes Xinjiang the fourth most infected region in the country, according to the region's AIDS response working committee. The committee also estimated that the actual number of HIV carriers and AIDS patients in the region is more than 60,000 and that sexual transmission has become the major route of HIV transmission in the region.
