Pay As You Throw (PAYT)
A usage-pricing model in the United States for disposing municipal solid waste, the PAYT program charges citizens for trash bins and bags but provides recycling services for free. By charging residents more for throwing out garbage, PAYT encourages people to limit waste and recycle. Authorities measure waste by weight or size.
About 7,000 US cities use PAYT. A study by Duke University in North Carolina found that implementing PAYT nationwide would lead to a 32- to 59-percent increase in recycling.
