Residents protest

Construction of a massive garbage incinerator in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, will not begin if a large majority of residents oppose the project, officials said yesterday.

In response to a protest by more than 1,000 residents outside Guangzhou government offices on Monday, Su Zequn, vice-mayor of Guangzhou, said environmental assessments along with solicitation of public opinions for the project are under way.
