Man dies in detention

The sudden unexplained death of a detainee in Nanhe county of Hebei province has led to family members' suspicion that the man was beaten to death by local detention house officials, Chinanews.com.cn reported yesterday.

Chen Xuechuan died of a sudden cardiac death on Nov 2 after being sent to a local hospital by the county detention house officials. The detainee's wife, Liu Shuzhen, found many injuries on Chen's back, shoulder and arms on Oct 28 when she took care of Chen, who was hospitalized at that time due to a rare nerve disease. Liu believed her husband was beaten to death by detention house personnel.
