Aiai's 1-year-old baby girl dangles from her neck and rolls on to the ground to examine her toes. It is a touching scene and a happy period for the 28-year-old chimpanzee mother who has had the tragedy of losing two children.
Suddenly, however, hackles raised, Aiai (whose name means love) charges at the thick glass that separates her from the photographer who is taking pictures of her baby.
She is intensely protective and this is understandable considering the painful journey she has taken to have her baby, which included losing two mates and quitting smoking.
