In the year of Jiashen (1644), rebelling peasants led by Li Zicheng broke through the imperial palace, forcing Emperor Chongzheng to hang himself on a hill behind the palace court - thus bringing an end to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Yet Li and his "Dashun Dynasty" only kept their grip on power for 40 days. Shen Fan's images portray limited aspects of Western abstract painting, but they are fundamentally different as he uses a Chinese approach to his works coined Maximalism.
