Record for ancient artwork

A rare imperial painting from the Qianlong period has sold for 134 million yuan ($19.6 million), a new world record for a Chinese ancient painting, according to the Beijing News. Painted by Xu Yang, a famous imperial painter of the mid-Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the work was auctioned with a starting price of 78 million yuan, in a sale held by the Zhongmaoshengjia Auction Company in Beijing.

The 18-m long hand scroll tells the tale of the emperor's life and is considered a reliable reference of history during that period.
