In memory of a master

A selection of classic operas will be staged to commemorate the 115th birthday of Peking Opera master Mei Lanfang (1894-1961). Leading the cast are Mei Baojiu, son of Mei Lanfang, besides other established performers including Li Hongyan, Hu Wenge, and Tan Mingxin. The selected arias are from Farewell My Concubine, Drunken Beauty and The Goddess of Heaven Scatters Flowers.

Hiking in scholars' land

Lingshui Village, west of Beijing, is famous for producing tons of scholars and men who served in the government since the Sui Dynasty (AD 581-618). It is a good place to explore how the imperial exams were conducted. Lingshui's beautiful scenery and unique and well-preserved architecture and folk culture make it a place worth a visit. Reservation is required. Meet at Lido Starbucks (north-east gate of Lido Holiday Inn, 6 Jiangtailu, Chaoyang district) for bus transportation.

Women and passion

The theme of Liu Manhua's oil painting series, Passion of Floating Life, is women. Ignoring their facial features, Liu lays stress on their bodies, exuding vitality, strength, beauty and passion. The color scheme is warm, with patches of ochre and amber dominating the tableau.

Strength and creativity

Collision, a joint show featuring more than 50 signature works by some of the most influential experimental artists, including Xu Bing, Fang Lijun, Huang Yongping and Sui Jianguo, is running at the Art Museum of the Central Academy of Fine Arts.

The exhibition opened on Oct 10, coinciding with the first International Forum on Art Collecting.

"With this exhibition, I want to give viewers an intimate understanding of the inner strength and creativity of Chinese artists, despite the contemporary art market's current lackluster state," curator Yu Ke says.
