Britain to send more troops

Prime Minister Gordon Brown ordered hundreds more troops to Afghanistan yesterday, pledging to bolster the international effort on the condition that Britain's allies also do their fair share to support the war effort.

Brown did not immediately give a figure for the size of the increase when he spoke in the House of Commons, but he said Britain's overall contribution would rise to 9,500 troops - an increase of about 500.
