Big Bang scientist in court

French magistrates were yesterday expected to charge a scientist from a nuclear lab that studies the "Big Bang" at the dawn of the universe with having Al-Qaida links, judicial officials said.

The 32-year-old engineer was arrested on Thursday. It was unclear what offenses the suspect would be charged with. Investigators have said that in communications with known Al-Qaida militants in North Africa he had expressed a desire to carry out attacks, but had "not got to the stage of carrying out material acts of preparation".
